How to Create ChatGPT Ads for Your Shopify Store: Specs, Images, and Product Feed Ads (2026)

Everything you need to build a ChatGPT ad for a Shopify store: OpenAI's exact specs, how to write the title and copy, which image to use, why product feed ads matter most for stores, and how to see what your ads actually sell.

The short version

  • A ChatGPT ad has a title (OpenAI recommends 16 to 24 characters, 50 maximum), one line of copy (32 to 48 recommended, 100 maximum), a square image (at least 640x640; upload 1200x1200), your brand name and logo, and a landing page OpenAI's crawler can reach.
  • Shopify stores can build ads two ways: hand-written ads for a product or collection, and product feed ads, which fill in the title, price, image and link from your catalog. OpenAI calls feed ads "among the strongest-performing ads in our program to date."
  • Write for coverage: several ads per ad group, each with a different reason to buy, each with its own image. Link the product page, never your homepage.
  • Creating the ad is half the job. The other half is knowing which ads sell, which takes server-side conversion tracking tied to your Shopify orders.
  • Every spec below comes from OpenAI's own documentation, checked October 29, 2026, with links at the end. Example brands are fictional.

Most guides to creating ChatGPT ads are written for software companies and agencies. This one is for Shopify stores. The specs are the same for everyone, but a store has two advantages a SaaS company does not: a catalog OpenAI can turn into ads automatically, and real orders that tell you exactly which ads paid off. Here is how to use both.

How do you create a ChatGPT ad for a Shopify store?

Pick one product or collection and one shopper need, write a short title and a line of copy that adds a new fact, add a square product image, and point the ad at that product's page. Step by step:

  1. Make sure tracking is live first. Install the OpenAI pixel and Conversions API before you spend, so every ad is measured from day one. Goal reporting does not backfill.
  2. Pick one product or collection per ad group, matched to one shopper need (a gift, a problem, a budget).
  3. Write a title of about 16 to 24 characters that names the product and one concrete benefit.
  4. Write copy of about 32 to 48 characters that adds a fact the title did not say: price, material, shipping, guarantee.
  5. Add a square product image, 1200x1200, one clear subject.
  6. Link the product or collection page, make sure OpenAI's crawler can reach it, and add UTM tags.
  7. Add context hints to the ad group, write several ads with different angles, and add product feed ads for the rest of your catalog.

Hand-written ads or product feed ads?

Both, for different jobs.

  • Hand-written ads are best for your hero products, collections, bundles and offers, where you want to choose the angle yourself.
  • Product feed ads cover the rest of the catalog. You upload a product feed, choose which products an ad group can use, and create one product-ad template. OpenAI fills in each ad's title, description, price, image and link from the product, and you can mix in your brand, as in "{{brand}}: {{product.title}}". Each product-feed ad group holds one product-ad template.

For most stores, feed ads are where the reach is. OpenAI calls them "among the strongest-performing ads in our program to date." But they are only as good as the feed. Every product needs the required fields, a public page and image, and current price and stock, and OpenAI expires feed items after two weeks unless the feed is refreshed. Product-feed campaigns also target at country level only, so check that feed ads serve in your market.

That is the job Product Feed for ChatGPT Ads does for Shopify stores: it maps every variant to OpenAI's format, checks each row against OpenAI's rules before upload (missing images, prices, text that is too long), re-syncs after you edit your catalog, and lets you choose which products go into ads. The full field list is in OpenAI Ads product feed requirements.

How do you write a ChatGPT ad title?

Name the product and one concrete benefit, in about 16 to 24 characters. OpenAI asks for clear, specific, benefit-focused titles in plain language. A price, a material, a size or a use case beats an adjective every time.

Leak-proof kids bottles23The #1 Luxury Brand19
Linen sheets under $15023

The weak titles are not too long. They just say nothing a shopper can act on.

How do you write ChatGPT ad copy?

Use the one line of copy (about 32 to 48 characters) to add a fact the title did not say. OpenAI's guidance: complement the title, do not repeat it, and keep every claim accurate, because the claim has to match your product page.

Compare "Discover quality products you will love today." (46 characters): the right length, and empty. For the deeper rules, with before-and-after rewrites, read how to write ChatGPT ads that convert.

Which image should you use?

Your best square product photo, at 1200x1200. OpenAI asks for simple, relevant images that match the title and copy, and warns against abstract or cluttered ones.

  • One subject. The product on a clean background, or in use. Skip collages.
  • Little or no text in the image. The title and copy do the talking.
  • Match the angle. A gift angle shows the gift box; a size angle shows the product in a small space.
  • Direct image links for bulk upload. The URL must open the image itself, not a preview page or a login.
  • Feed ads use your product images. In product feed ads the image comes from the feed, so your Shopify product photos are your creative. Weak photos mean weak ads.

How many ads should you create?

Several per ad group, each with a different reason to buy. OpenAI's advice is to "build for coverage": many distinct title and copy variations, each introducing a new angle, not the same message reworded. Here is a worked example for Juniper & Wick, a fictional candle store, in one ad group:

AngleTitle (chars)Copy (chars)Image
PriceCandles under $30 (17)Hand-poured soy, 50-hour burn time. (35)Candle with price tag
ProblemSmoky room? Try soy wax (23)Soy burns cleaner than paraffin candles. (40)Lit candle, clear air
GiftGift set for hosts (18)Three mini candles in a gift box. (33)Open gift box
MaterialLead-free cotton wicks (22)Phthalate-free scents, 100% soy wax. (36)Close-up of the wick
SpeedShips today if by 2 pm (22)Free US shipping on orders over $50. (36)Packed box at the door

Every claim in those ads has to be true on the product page. Then let the results decide which angles stay, which is why the measurement step below matters.

How do you set up the landing page and context hints?

  • Link the product or collection page that answers the ad, not your homepage.
  • Let OpenAI's crawler in. OAI-AdsBot must reach the page, and OAI-SearchBot must reach product feed images. Firewalls, bot rules and password pages block it. See how to allow OAI-AdsBot on Shopify.
  • Add UTM tags so ChatGPT traffic shows up as its own source in Shopify, and keep OpenAI's oppref click parameter intact through any redirect, because that is how sales get matched to ads.
  • Write context hints per ad group as clear phrases about what you sell, who it helps or when it is useful. They are not keywords. See how to write context hints.

What gets ChatGPT ads rejected or ignored?

  • A blocked landing page. Bot protection, a CAPTCHA, a storefront password or a geo rule stops OAI-AdsBot and the ad fails review.
  • Image links that are not images. A sign-in page or preview page fails validation.
  • Claims the page does not back up. A price or offer in the ad must appear on the page.
  • Restricted categories. Check OpenAI's ad policies before you write.
  • Ten versions of one message. Synonyms are not angles.
  • Edits without patience. Every edit creates a new version that goes through review again.

After you launch: see which ads actually sell

Creating ads is the easy part to get right. Knowing which of them make money is where most stores get stuck, because clicks and CPA in Ads Manager do not tell you what landed in your store.

That is what Reach is built for. It installs in about 30 seconds with no theme code, sends every purchase, checkout, add to cart and product view to OpenAI's Conversions API server-side so conversion campaigns have data to optimize on, and shows the revenue, orders and top products your ChatGPT Ads drove, from your real Shopify orders. When you test five angles, that is how you know which one to keep.

One honest note: ChatGPT Ads is a new channel, and only a small share of stores are profitable on it so far. Good creative and clean tracking are how you find out fast, and cheaply, whether it works for yours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a ChatGPT ad for my Shopify store?
Pick one product or collection and one shopper need, write a title of about 16 to 24 characters and a line of copy of about 32 to 48 characters that adds a new fact, add a square 1200x1200 product image, and link the product page, making sure OpenAI's OAI-AdsBot crawler can reach it. Put several ads with different angles in each ad group, and add product feed ads for the rest of your catalog.
What are the ChatGPT ad specs?
Title: 3 to 50 characters, about 16 to 24 recommended. Copy: up to 100 characters, about 32 to 48 recommended. Image: square, at least 640x640, and no larger than 1200x1200 in Ads Manager or bulk upload, so 1200x1200 works everywhere. Logo: upload at least 256x256. Landing page: an HTTP or HTTPS URL up to 2,048 characters that OAI-AdsBot can crawl.
What image size should I use for ChatGPT ads?
A square image at 1200x1200 pixels. OpenAI's API requires at least 640x640, and Ads Manager and bulk upload accept square PNG or JPG files no larger than 1200x1200, so 1200x1200 meets both. Use one clear subject that matches the title, with little or no text.
What are ChatGPT product feed ads?
Ads built from your product catalog. You upload a product feed, choose which products an ad group can use, and create one product-ad template; OpenAI fills in each ad's title, description, price, image and link from the product. OpenAI calls feed ads among the strongest-performing ads in its program. Feed items expire after two weeks unless the feed is refreshed.
How many ChatGPT ads should I create?
Several per ad group, each with a different reason to buy, such as price, a problem solved, a gift use, a material or fast shipping. OpenAI recommends building for coverage with many distinct variations rather than rewording one message. Then keep the angles that produce sales, which requires conversion tracking tied to your orders.
Why was my ChatGPT ad rejected?
Most often because OpenAI's crawler could not reach the landing page (bot protection, a CAPTCHA, a storefront password or a geo rule), because an image link opened a preview or sign-in page instead of the image, because a claim in the ad was not on the page, or because the product is in a restricted category. Fix the cause and resubmit.
How do I know which ChatGPT ads are selling?
Track conversions server-side and tie them to your Shopify orders. Reach sends every purchase, checkout, add to cart and product view to OpenAI's Conversions API and shows the revenue, orders and top products your ChatGPT ads drove, so you can see which angles make money.
